Anouk Wipprecht - CODAME Featured Artist

What does fashion lack? “Microcontrollers” according to Dutch based fashiontech designer and innovator Anouk Wipprecht. As she is working in the emerging field of “fashionable technology”; a rare combination of fashion design combined with engineering, science and interaction/user experience design, she created an impressive body of tech-enhanced designs bringing together fashion and technology in an unusual way. She creates technological couture; with systems around the body that tend towards artificial intelligence; projected as ‘host’ systems on the human body, her designs move, breath, and react to the environment around them.

Part futuristic, part anime-meets-high fashion, her aesthetics are set apart from more utilitarian wearables (which are all about function) and can be considered artistic creations in themselves. Many of her designs have been exhibited in exhibitions as well as fashion events. In Anouk’s designs the technology creates the aesthetics as opposed to simply enhancing a function which is hidden. Keen on showing the nuts and bolts of the garments (often the valves and mechanisms are displayed on the outside) we witness the designs creating their own unique forms of interaction, movement and meaning.

Wipprecht is an artist, designer, curator and lecturer (Netherlands, China, Austria) in electronic couture, worked for names as the Black Eyed Peas, SuperBowl 2011, Eurovision 2012, with work featured in international magazines. She is the brainchild and curator of the TECHNOSENSUAL ‘Where Fashion meets Technology’ exhibition, with attached Artist in Residency program to stimulate the grow of fashiontech projects coupling fashion designers and engineers together, that took place in Vienna/Austria over the summer of 2012 and attracted 32.000 visitors in a two and a half month time span.

She is currently based in Vienna/Austria, and travels between Amsterdam (NL), Los Angeles (USA), San Francisco (USA) and Montreal (CA).

Linda Franco - CODAME Featured Fashiontech Industry Insider
Linda Franco, entrepreneurial tech-fashionista, started out studying marketing and strategic design at Centro University in Mexico City. Shortly after, she co-founded The Gyzu Experiement, a web design and development firm,  and alongside this she set up the Plan de Escape prison project which taught male inmates the ins and outs of fashion and trends with the end goal of creating their own fashion label. As for her current projects at Machina Wearable Technology, Linda and her team are taking the industry to the next level with the idea of open source in wearable tech. She is on a cutting edge when it comes to creating interactive wearable tech design that can be worn by anyone, in consideration with its aesthetics and functionality.
Linda will present her current project with Machina Wearable Technology, MIDI Controller Jacket v1.0. This jacket allows the user to create music through motion and touch sensors with a mobile app. Linda and her team spent months on research to have the perfect fabrics, that could later interact organically with the chosen technology, the design being functional for the user, and visual identity of a product being appealing to aspiring musicians, fashionistas, and people who like cool lifestyle stuff. Welcome to ORGANICISM, DIGITALIZED GLOBAL BRAIN.
Meet Linda and her team at our CODAME FASHION+MUSIC Event June 26th, 2013 from 7pm-2am at Public Works, San Francisco.

CODAME Featured Artist: Vinit Patil

Vinit was raised in Bangkok, where he narrowly escaped baptism at RIS, a school run by fanatic  American missionaries. He then moved to India to attend Engineering School. Even after graduating, Vinit had no idea how to fix a radio or program a VCR. His uncle was kind enough to give him a job soldering circuit boards. Vinit quit within a few months (much to his uncle’s delight) to pursue a more creative career.

He  decided to attend the Creative Circus. Vinit got his copywriting diploma in 2002 which, even today, his dad believes is worthless (it kinda is).

Vinit previously worked at Taxi, New York for two years as a writer, not a cab driver (you may think so, since he was a Indian guy in NYC ).

Prior to New York, he worked at Leo Burnett , where he braved the Chicago winters for three years.

Vinit believes there are plenty of ways for brands to make millions of dollars, but the cheapest and fastest way is through is innovation.

Vinit has won awards for innovation in digital advertising from the Webby’s, The London International Advertising Festivals, The One Show, Cannes, The FWA and other shows with fun parties.

Natacha Merrit - CODAME Featured Artist

An accomplished artist and producer, Merritt was ready for a new challenge and soon developed a passion for biology - “the ultimate exploration of life,” she says. She returned to higher education in 2005 to study biology at the San Francisco State University, specialising in Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology.

In 2008, while deep in her studies of biology, she wrote an ‘insect circus’ inspired by her observations of the insect world and celebrating the importance of biodiversity. She licensed the rights to Cirque du Soleil and the circus became OVO, still touring. Merritt’s recent work highlights how our morphologies are intimately linked to other species through shared and convergent evolution. While proposing a new feminist stance, Merritt incorporates scientific insights with her artistic practice. Her new work unveils an untapped sexual beauty and eroticism hidden within all species.

Meet Natacha at our CODAME 3D PRINTING Event May 1, 2013 from 6-9pm at Adobe, San Francisco.
