Unity for Artists: Down the Rabbit Hole with Jasmine Roberts
Oct. 26th at GitHub San Francisco
http://codame.com/events/workshop-immersive-xr-journeys
The emergence of interactive art exhibits like 29Rooms, Museum of Ice Cream, Onedome, Artechouse has been recently trending. Now imagine others experiencing your creations without the need for them to travel or augmenting a pre-existing accessible physical space with your own creations.
Join creative technologist Jasmine Roberts in learning to create surreal and immersive environments in the Unity Engine and play with concepts like scale and haptic interaction. Unity is used in 80% of AR/MR/VR so is a valuable tool to get acquainted with. Unity’s versatility opens a myriad of possibilities for creators.
A lot of creation processes for quality experiences are very obscure because it is all based in technologies; we will make this accessible, collaborative and fun. The goal is to demystify XR development!
In addition to Unity, we will be using OpenXR so you can port your creation to different devices. By the end of this workshop, you will have created an interactive and immersive journey that you can potentially showcase and submit to exhibitions and festivals.

About Jasmine Roberts
Jasmine Roberts is a researcher, engineer and lecturer in the field of immersive computing (specifically VR/AR). Originally a physicist studying laser optics and holography, she was drawn to the totality of mixed-reality to utilize the creative aspect of her character. Roberts has a Bachelor in Applied Physics, a Masters in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and a Master of Design. Although, spiritual and emotive in her off-time, she is very pragmatic concerning her work and creates the necessary tools and pipelines to help creators build immersive content.
Currently she is building systems for affective computing, assembling workflows of real time capture systems for avatars and navigating web-based cloud streaming for 3D experiences and games. Recently, Jasmine worked as an engineer in Intel’s RealSense team in 2016, Sony PlayStation R&D in 2017 and NASA and Unity in 2018. She has lectured at SCI_Arc, Strelka Institute, NYU Center for Data Science, Harvard University, UMass and other institutions. She serves as the chair of @UN Women in VR and is on the steering committee for IEEEVR. Her dream is to eventually go back finish her PhD and have a lab of her own where she can mentor students while researching emerging phenomena.
