Oneiric Mirror
By Kesson

Oneiric Mirror is a speculative exploration of the evolving relationship between humanity and nature as seen through the gaze of a machine. It reimagines humans as hybridized, transnatural entities, their forms shaped by the intricate bond with the natural world. This mirror offers a phantasmagoric reflection where humans appear as posthuman, demi-god-like beings, questioning whether such a transformation would change how we treat the Earth. Would we continue to destroy our environment, or would this intimate fusion inspire a deeper care for the planet, knowing our existence is inseparably linked to its well-being? This work represents the daydreams and nightmares of a neural network, a machine’s vision of our future. Trained on thousands of images of humans and nature, the AI doesn’t draw clear lines between them. Instead, it fuses these elements, creating uncanny, oneiric hybrids. It reveals a new world born from the machine's interpretations, where human and non-human entities merge, resulting in forms that are simultaneously familiar and alien. Oneiric Mirror is part of a broader body of work that investigates the machine’s role in reshaping our relationship with the non-human. By embracing the imperfections and unpredictability of the neural network's creOneiric Mirrorative process, it explores the fluid boundaries between the organic and the synthetic. Created using a customized version of Nvidia’s StyleGAN 2, the piece reimagines the machine's hallucinations, offering a compelling, yet unsettling, vision of our future. The final result was rendered through custom software developed by the artist.
